Green group seeks rail line sleepers rethink

Environmentalists have called on the Victorian Government to reverse a decision about the use of timber sleepers to upgrade the Mildura rail line.

The Government has ordered the purchase of 300,000 red gum sleepers to be harvested from along the Murray River in New South Wales.

Nick Roberts from the Victorian National Parks Association says the Government should use concrete sleepers instead.

"The use of wooden railway sleepers has 500 per cent greater greenhouse and CO2 emissions impact on Victoria and the climate than the concrete alternative and the concrete alternative lasts three to four times longer," he said.
