Illegal Access: Namadgi National Park

15-August-2006

A joint operation involving members of the Australian Federal Police Rural Patrol and Park Rangers was recently conducted in the southern section of Namadgi National Park.

The purpose of the exercise was to target illegal pig hunting activity, vandalism and theft.  Unfortunately there has been a marked increase in anti social behaviour in recent times requiring an increase in late shift patrols in and around the park.

On the evening Friday 14th July 2006 Rangers and AFP Rural Patrol members conducted a late shift patrol of Old Boboyan Road, Grassy Creek and Mt Clear areas within Namadgi National Park.  Illegal access was detected during the patrol, unfortunately given the remote and difficult terrain the offender/ s could not be apprehended.  However, significant intelligence was gained in terms of the offender /s access and movements in this region.

As a result of the joint patrol a burning vehicle was also discovered in the Gigerline Nature Reserve.  This vehicle was well alight when detected requiring the attendance of the Fire Brigade.  Police investigations are continuing as to suspicious circumstances surrounding this incident.

On the evening of Sunday 16th July pig hunters were detected in the Hospital Hill area of Gudgenby by the local resident Ranger.  While the vehicle failed to stop, sufficient intelligence was gained which will assist police with their inquiries.   This particular incident highlights the benefits of Rangers residing within the park providing an effective after hour’s presence.

These joint proactive exercises will continue with Rangers and Police confident that in undertaking these patrols a clear message can be sent that such behaviour is not acceptable with a national park setting. .
