The Issue Feral Horse Damage in Kosciuszko (NSW) and Alpine (Vic) National Parks

01-February-2014

In Nov/Dec 2013 through the walks program of NPA ACT, a party of 9 walkers, undertook a 9 day pack walk, into the southern region of Kosciuszko National Park and the northern part of the Alpine NP (Vic).  Those walkers couldn’t get away from the extensive and overwhelming damage being done by feral horses.  During that trip the party came across people from Museum Vic, 4WD Victoria (taking part in the Parks Vic Bioscan 2 week project of 60 persons pw), farmers from Kojonup WA doing the AAWT, Ben Cruachan Bush Walkers (Vic), small independent bushwalking groups, and a large number of Latrobe Uni students from their Outdoor Education faculty - all of whom were shocked at the feral horse damage, its effect on their drinking water and water filters (that were clogged before they even got to the bad parts), and that there was evidence of damage and dung virtually within 10 metres of anywhere they went (including off track locations).
